This is an excellent question I think these days a lot of people when they say they want to build a habit What theyre really saying is that they want to do something difficult but not have to put too much work into it I wish I could make a habit out of writing every day I wish I could make a habit out of exercising every day Well you know many times those behaviors will never become habits and its absolutely imperative that we know the difference between ah habit and a routine You see a habit by definition is a behavior done with little or no conscious thought A routine on the other hand is defined as a series of behaviors frequently repeated So many behaviors will never become habits although every habit first has to become a routine now This is really important because if you expected behaviour to become a habit when it has no chance of becoming a habit principally behavior thats difficult to do That requires a lot of conscious thought that requires a lot of effort and you expect it to become a habit and it doesnt become a habit It doesnt become effortless Well then youre gonna be very disappointed So its much better to understand which kind of behaviors can even become a habit And for those that can become a habit I dont have that expectation Some behaviors should stay routines
